Safety is the most important concern not only for car owners but its manufacturers and governments all around the world. Lots of time while taking your car for regular service or for replacing any damaged part especially the windshield, you always have a concern regarding the quality and safety of the product your workshop is using.
Is my car windshield safe?
Have you gone through such a dilemma before selecting a windshield for your car? Windshield replacement quality can be determined through many factors that include glass quality, adhesive quality, and workmanship.
Though all these factors are important yet most important is selecting a good quality windshield for your car.
But how can you ensure that the windshield for your car passes all safety and quality parameters?
Car glass manufacturers provide data sheets for all products regarding quality and safety tests. For a consumer, it is not always possible to check the datasheet for all parts. So, the simplest way is to check for the ISI mark in your windshield logo.
In 2019, the Government of India has decided to deal with the ambiguity in Motor Vehicle Act (MV act) regarding car parts certification. MV act has been modified to ensure that all automotive parts used in Indian cars must be BIS certified from April 1, 2021. All types of glasses used in cars in India need to be certified for conformity of standards by BIS as per Indian laws. Though due to COVID restrictions this compliance date has been extended till April 1, 2022, Yet for you, BIS certification or ISI mark is the most convenient and visible way to check for a safe and good quality windshield for your car.
BIS Certification IS:2553 Part II
As per Indian laws, all car glass manufacturers need to get product certification for quality and safety before using them on cars from the Bureau OF Indian Standards (BIS). This is law is applicable to all cars manufactured in India including foreign manufacturers using CKD kits. Only cars directly imported are exempted from this rule. The certified glass must have a BIS mark or ISI mark on each windshield or glass pane used in the car.

Some of the most prominent automotive safety standards are ECE for Europe, DOT for the US, KC in South Korea, JIS for Japan, SABS for South Africa, AS for Australia, CCC for China, BS for Great Britain, etc. You may have noticed these through your car glass logo. Some luxury car brands like Mercedes, BMW that use CKDs have imported parts manufactured in Europe and have Europen certification.
Now that you have selected a BIS-certified windshield for your car, you need to consider other things for safe windshield replacement.
A Reputed Workshop
To get a quality windshield replacement you should always select a reliable car glass replacement company or workshop. The workmanship is the key to safe windshield replacement. The technicians should be well trained and experienced. Different car models need different techniques to replace windshields and associated sensors.
Ensure Quality Adhesive
Another aspect of a quality windshield replacement is the windshield adhesive. You must not compromise in adhesive quality for a few bucks. It is the adhesive that will keep your car windshield bound to the frame. Original or OE quality adhesives can play a vital role to keep the windshield in its place in case of an impact. This can be a life-saving decision for the occupants.
Check for Warranty
For windshield replacement, you should always ask for a warranty on the product and workmanship. A warranty ensures that you get quality aftersales service. Warranty is important to ensure proper replacement of the part in case there is some sort of manufacturing defect.
